The Olympic Cup was instituted by Baron de Coubertin in 1906. It is now awarded to an institution or association with a general reputation for merit and integrity which has been active and efficient in the development of the Olympic Movement.

The Cup is generally awarded to a city hosting the games or the relevant Olympic organising group, but in 1915, Rugby School's contribution to the development of the Olympic Movement was officially recognised by de Coubertin when he awarded the School the Olympic Cup “for its immeasurable contribution to sports pedagogy”.
