Admission at 11+ is open only to day boys and girls from maintained schools and independent schools that finish at 11+. Admission from preparatory schools that continue to 13+ is permitted only if the pupil is moving into the Rugby area or with the express permission of a local prep school head before registration. All pupils join Marshall House, a small day house for Year 7 and 8 pupils.
Applications are made to the Admissions Registrar preferably before Christmas of Year 6. The entrance tests, held in January at Rugby School, consist of written tests in verbal reasoning and numeracy together with a piece of creative writing (of about 300 words) on a set topic. There will also be interviews of a general nature with the Housemaster (Hm) of Marshall House and also the Hm of the senior house. In addition we ask for a report from the current school.
A number of Academic Scholarships, Music Scholarships and Foundation Awards may be given. For further detail see the Scholarships section.
Members of Marshall House qualify for entry to the main School at Year 9 (13+) without sitting a further examination. Marshall House pupils usually progress to the day Houses, Town House (boys) and Southfield (girls), but it is possible to progress to a boarding House, provided a place has been reserved in the chosen House prior to entry.
We encourage candidates to spend a morning in Marshall House prior to the entrance tests. We recommend that this is booked as soon as possible in the autumn of Year 6.
We are happy to consider later applications by means of a Waiting List Registration for places that may become available.
