Our scholarship provision is designed to attract boys and girls of outstanding talent and skill in a variety of fields. We value scholarship of all sorts. Through the excellence of our academic provision and of our facilities we aim to foster high achievement at all levels and to challenge expectations. The interplay of teaching and learning and the experiences to be gained from being part of a rich and diverse community encourage all pupils to develop their talents and to emerge as confident, well rounded individuals.
All Scholarships to Rugby carry a nominal fee reduction of 10% and all may be augmented to 100% of the fees subject to means testing. Applications for augmentation must be made to the Bursar.
Our Foundationship and Scholarship Augmentations and Bursaries policy can be found here.
13+ ( Year 9) Academic Scholarships
Boys and girls who are 12 or over and under 14 at midnight on August 31 in the year the examination is taken may sit. Candidates who were previously registered for entry and who do not obtain awards are normally admitted to the School on the result of the Scholarship Examination; in a very few cases candidates may be required to sit all or part of the Common Entrance Examination before admission.
The examination is held at Rugby in early May for entry in September of the same year.
16+ (Year 12) Academic Scholarships
Boys and girls aiming to enter the School after GCSE may compete for a number of 16+ Scholarships. The Scholarship interviews are held at Rugby in mid-November in the year preceding the pupil's entry to the School. Candidates must first take the Sixth Form Entrance Examination and those showing scholarship potential will be called for Scholarship interviews with the relevant Heads of Department.
Music Scholarships
Several Scholarships are awarded each year at 11+, 13+ and 16+. At 16+ the examination audition is held at Rugby in November, and at 11+ and 13+ in late January or early February of the year of entry.
Art Scholarships
A number of Art Scholarships are awarded each year at 16+ with the examination taken at Rugby as part of the 16+ Academic Scholarship in November and at 13+ with the examination taken at Rugby in May. Candidates may take this together with the 13+ Academic Scholarship.
Design and Technology Scholarships
Awards are offered at 13+ and 16+. The examinations are held in conjunction with the Academic Scholarships. At 13+ candidates can, but need not, take the full Academic Scholarship as well.
Sports Scholarships
A number of Scholarships are awarded each year at 13+ and 16+ to candidates with outstanding ability in the major team games (rugby, hockey, netball, cricket, tennis). At 13+ applicants should be nominated by their Head Teacher to attend an initial assessment at Rugby. Short-listed candidates will then be observed in match conditions. At 16+ candidates will be interviewed as part of the sixth form entrance examination in November. Short-listed candidates will subsequently be observed in match conditions or will be invited to join a training session at the School.
Foundation Scholarships for Day Pupils
In 1567 Lawrence Sheriff in his will bequeathed money to establish a school in perpetuity in Rugby to serve chiefly for the children of Rugby and Brownsover. It is in the execution of the terms of this will that Foundation Scholarships are offered.
Several Foundation Scholarships are awarded each year to day boy and day girl candidates of 11+, 13+ and 16+. Awards are at 10% of the School fee, but may be augmented to 100% subject to means-testing. All candidates for Foundation Scholarships must live within a radius of 10 miles from the Rugby Clock Tower.
Foundation Scholarships At 11+ (Year 7)
These awards qualify for entrance to Marshall House.
Candidates must presently be at a maintained school, or an independent school that finishes at 11+. Awards made at 11+ continue into the Upper School.
The 11+ examination takes place at Rugby School in the January preceding entrance.
Foundation Scholarships At 13+ (Year 9)
Foundation Scholarship awards qualify exclusively for entrance to Town House (boys) and Southfield (girls). The examination takes place in early May for entry in September.
Only present pupils of Marshall House may compete for an award a second time.
The examination takes place simultaneously with the Academic Scholarship in May. Eligible candidates may sit for both awards.
