13+ Entry
Boarders
Registrations should be made for a particular House. A visit to select a House should be arranged about three to four years before entry House lists are restricted to 25 names per House per year (20 for Griffin). Each year there are ten places available in each House (8 for Griffin).
Pupils are interviewed in the Advent and Lent Terms (October to March), four or five terms before entry to the School. This involves a detailed report from their Headmaster or Headmistress, a computerised entrance test, an interview with the Housemaster or Housemistress of their chosen House and an interview with another senior member of staff. Following the assessment conditional places are offered in Houses, subject to applicants passing either the Common Entrance Examination with an average of at least 55%, the School’s own entrance tests in English and Mathematics (for those whose schools do not prepare them for Common Entrance) or satisfying the School’s entrance requirements in the Scholarship examination.
Before the interviews take place, parents are asked to pay the Entrance Fee. Payment of this Fee constitutes on the parents’ part a pledge that Rugby is their first choice of School. If the child is not admitted to the School on academic, medical or behavioural grounds, the Entrance Fee will be refunded; if withdrawn by the parents after a place has been offered, the fee will be forfeited. Following completion of the full course at the School, parents may elect to receive a full refund of the Fee or to leave the Fee with the School, in which case it is used to augment the fund that is available for future scholarships and grants.
Day Pupils
Entrance to Town House (boys) and Southfield (girls) is competitive and is decided on academic merit at 11+, i.e. two years before entry to the School. Prospective day pupils who plan to enter at 13+ will sit the same entrance tests as those entering Marshall House at 11+ and at the same time. Day places in Town House and Southfield are offered shortly after the entrance tests. Boys and girls must then pass the Common Entrance Examination with an average of at least 55%, be offered a place as a result of the Scholarship examinations or, if they are at a school which does not prepare for Common Entrance, sit the School’s own English and Mathematics papers in the Advent Term before entry.
